Rémi Labrusse teaches contemporary art history at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), Paris. A large part of his research is focused on the imagined sources of the Western modern condition from the late 18th century onwards – e. g. the notions of Prehistory or the Orient. He has published books on the idea of prehistory (Préhistoire. L’Envers du temps, 2019), 19th-century theories of ornament (Face au chaos. Pensées de l’ornement à l’âge de l’industrie, 2018), or on artists including Matisse, Miró and Bonnard. He also co-curated exhibitions, among them Préhistoire, une énigme moderne (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2019), Islamophilies. L’Europe moderne et les arts de l’Islam (Museum of Fine Arts, Lyons, 2011), Purs décors? Arts de l’Islam, regards du XIXe siècle (Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, 2007).
