Conversation with Raisa Rexer

Raisa Rexer completed her Ph.D. in French after graduate work in English and in Comparative Literature, She takes a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to research on the literature and culture of 19th century France. Her interests focus on the intersection of the visual arts and literature, the early history of photography, and the history of pornography. In her recent book she examined the early history of nude photography in France and its influence on contemporary cultural debates and literary representations of the body. Her next book is a dual biography exploring the intersecting lives of two woman pioneers of early French photography, the photographer Laure Mathilde Gouin Braquehais and her model, Antoinette Jattiot.
